Heide Fasnacht

Bad Negs, 2019/20

Many of the photos have damaged emulsion and they are, naturally, my favorites.
The punctum IS the damage, its wonderful white tendrils and crackling intersections vying to be the subject matter! Maybe it is. Information is so layered and scrambled and white noisily interruptive of any clarity, much like these COVID days. But for me the crack, the buckled terrain of the photographic surface itself, IS the greatest of all opportunities! Plus this: how often does it not, in fact, correlate somehow with the imagery and I mean, literally crackling and sparking its damage like quote marks just inside the frame. I like it so much, even the ones I can’t figure out how to make art out of.
